Panel revalidation and demotion
How AreaCacao keeps your ISO 8586 panel sharp with a monthly recalculation.
Why it exists
A sensory panel drifts out of calibration over time. A taster who was an Expert two years ago may have stepped away from the craft or lost sensitivity. If no one reviews it, reports keep getting signed as if they were still an Expert, and that is false authority.
To prevent this, AreaCacao automatically recalculates each panelist's level.
How it works
Monthly recalculation
On the 1st of every month at 03:00 (Madrid time), an automated process goes through all active panelists and recalculates their assessor type based on their history over the last 6 months.
Because the calculation only looks at the last 6-month window, the process can promote a panelist who has completed recent tests or demote one who let a revalidation lapse. Every level change is recorded in the panelist's audit log.
Effect on each level
- An Expert who doesn't revalidate their basic tastes within the 6-month window drops to Selected.
- A Selected who doesn't keep at least 3 measured thresholds within 6 months drops to Initiated.
- A panelist who keeps their history current keeps their level.
If you want to keep someone at their level, they must complete the corresponding tests again before they expire within the 6-month window.
How to revalidate a panelist
Schedule a training tasting
Create a training tasting from the Evaluations area. On the test-type step, choose the test you need: Basic taste recognition to keep recognition current, or Threshold detection to keep thresholds current. See Create a tasting.
Assign the panelist
On the panel step of the wizard, select the panelist you want to revalidate.
Have them complete the test
When the tasting is closed, the result enters the panelist's history. At the next recalculation (or immediately when the test is recorded), their level updates according to the criteria in ISO 8586 assessor types.
