Extraction confidence
How sure the AI is about what it read, where you see it, and why it isn't the same as a recipe's validation score.
When the AI reads a document, it isn't always equally sure about what it understood. That certainty is the confidence: a measure of how much the AI trusts its own reading.
How it's expressed
Confidence is a value between 0 and 1 that you'll see as a percentage:
- Near 100% — the AI is very sure about what it read.
- Mid-range values — it read most of it, but some details weren't clear.
- Low values — the document was hard to read, and you should review the whole thing by hand.
Where you see it
- When you verify the document type: the Verify type banner shows you the detected type with its confidence percentage (for example, "Recipe (96% confidence)"). See Verify the document type.
- In the History: each import doesn't show a number per field, but rather warnings (sub-codes) that flag where the AI had doubts: "Ingredients not found", "Ambiguous unit", "Not a recipe", etc. Those warnings are your guide for knowing what to review in the editor. See Import history.
- In the Upload new tab: the readable labels for warnings only appear in the History. On each import's card in Upload new, the warnings show up as raw codes preceded by the prefix "warnings:" (for example, "warnings: MISSING_INGREDIENT, UDM_AMBIGUOUS"), untranslated.
High confidence doesn't guarantee the recipe is correct: it only tells you the AI read it confidently. Always review quantities, units, and ingredients before producing.
Confidence is not the validation score
These are two different things, and it's worth not confusing them:
- Confidence (of the AI) — how much the AI trusts that it read the document correctly. It belongs to the moment of the import.
- Validation score (of the recipe) — a technical assessment of whether the recipe is well formulated (balances, consistency of quantities, etc.), which lives in the editor and in the formulation tools.
A recipe can be imported with high confidence — the AI read it perfectly — and still need formulation adjustments. And the other way around: a reading with doubts doesn't mean the original recipe is wrong, only that the image was hard to read.
What to do based on the warnings
- No warnings — the reading was clean; still, take a quick look before saving.
- "Ingredients not found" — check in the editor that each ingredient was mapped to the catalog.
- "Ambiguous unit" — confirm the units for the affected quantities.
- "Not a recipe" — you probably uploaded another type of document; verify the type before retrying.
