Presentation order
How AreaCacao decides the order in which samples are served to each panelist to eliminate bias.
Why the order matters
If every panelist tastes the samples in the same order (for example, 1 → 2 → 3 → 4), the results get biased: the palate fatigues progressively and the last samples always score worse than the first ones, even when they are identical.
The presentation order balances the positions to neutralize this effect.
The four options
In the wizard these are the literal names of the options:
Random
The system assigns a different, random order to each panelist. It reduces bias but doesn't guarantee perfect balance. It's the default option.
Balanced (Williams)
A Williams balanced square distributes the samples so that each position is occupied by each sample the same number of times across the panel. Ideal for 5 samples or fewer; it guarantees carryover balance.
Cyclic Latin square
A variant of the Williams balanced design. Useful for multiple panel blocks or when the number of panelists isn't a multiple of the number of samples.
Manual
The leader sets the order by hand for each panelist. Useful when there's an external reason (for example, logistical constraints).
How to choose it
In Step 4 of the tasting wizard (Assessor panel), under Sample presentation order, select the method you prefer. Recommendations:
- 5 samples or fewer and a medium panel (6+): Balanced (Williams).
- Small panel (3–4): Random.
- Specific logistical reason: Manual.
How it plays out in the workshop
When you print the A4 sheets or hand out the digital evaluation link, each panelist receives their own order. The system records it and aggregates the results when you close the tasting.
